Diane Godfrey Physiotherapy

Diane Godfrey Physiotherapy is a single Owner physiotherapy practice, which provides a very personal touch. Physiotherapy plays an integral part in the multi-disciplinary approach to the management of a wide variety of conditions. I have 25 years experience as a registered physiotherapist dealing with spinal and peripheral joint and soft tissue conditions, cervicogenic headaches and sports injuries.

This experience has proved invaluable in dealing with the older client, as well as in-hospital physiotherapy. This includes the post operative management of hip and knee joint replacements as well as the management of various chest and neurological conditions.

The practice also boasts a Bioflex Laser unit which is the most advanced laser therapy system available as it is designed as a non-invasive, non toxic therapy for a wide variety of medical conditions including soft tissue injuries, arthritis, wound healing and sports injuries. This is a wonderful addition to manual (“hands on”) therapy as it promotes circulation, soft tissue healing and nerve regeneration in a significant way.

In the last 2 – 3 years, I have been exposed to the management of mastectomies, both in hospital and in an out-patient environment. This has been in large part due to the influence and tutelage of fellow physiotherapist, Aileen Goodenough, who has many years of experience in the treatment and ongoing management of lymphoedema.

Lymphoedema is a condition of localized fluid retention and tissue swelling caused by a compromised lymphatic system which normally returns fluid to the bloodstream. Causes of lymphoedema include infection, injury, trauma or cancer than can all affect the lymphatic system. Lymphoedema can sometimes also be a side effect of cancer treatment such as radiation therapy or removal of some lymph nodes which can damage the lymphatic system.

I completed the Certified Lymphoedema Training Course in September 2017. This included 62.5 clock hours of on-line pre-course training and 72.5 clock hours of live attendance continuing education. This phenomenal course has generated a whole new dimension to the practice which I find particularly rewarding as I am now able to assist women (and men!) of all ages in their fight against cancer and other conditions which cause lymphoedema.

Take home message:- Lymphoedema can be treated!
