Sensory Matters is a paediatric occupational therapy practice with a strong focus on sensory integration. We love our profession and the impact we can make in the lives of our clients. OT is unique as it addresses all areas of a child’s function including play, interaction, independence and learning. It aims to promote appropriate development, prevent delays and build confidence and skills through play. This means that children are working hard to develop their skills while having fun!
We work with a wide range of children – from babies who are irritable, fussy feeders and avoid sleep, to toddlers with excessive meltdowns and behavioural challenges, children with developmental delays and learning difficulties, those with sensory processing difficulties, as well as children who have been diagnosed with conditions needing support e.g. ADHD, autism, anxiety, cerebral palsy, genetic disorders.

Therapy provides a safe and fun space for children, and is often one of the only places where they can practice skills without feeling anxious. We work at various mainstream and special needs schools in our area, and see clients at our practices. We also love to educate parents, teachers and colleagues on various paediatric topics through workshops. We have a team of dynamic therapists working with us, and we work closely with other professionals in order to provide a holistic team approach. We have a strong focus on learning and thus continue to broaden our knowledge to ensure that we are able to keep therapy relevant and meaningful for our clients. When children are referred to occupational therapy, they are assessed in order to determine their strengths and areas needing support. Following a feedback meeting and report, therapy is commenced. The therapy process is not a ‘quick fix’ although we do see change when starting the therapy process, particularly in confidence and behaviour. With Covid-19, we have realised the importance of needing to support families, manage anxiety and create opportunities for sensory experiences. Learning and change is most effective when it is childfocused and fun, and this really makes our profession special.
