Bouquet

The first time I fell in love with flowers, I must have been 5 or 6.  I was dancing around a flower bed in my mum’s garden that was filled with poppies and I can remember that I thought ‘how beautiful is that!’  However, it took many years of flirting with other careers before I came back to flowers.   Twelve years ago, I had bought a farm with my partner and had a ‘purple dream’ of growing lavender but that didn’t come to pass.  My very dear friend and neighbour started growing gerbera daisies in tunnels on her farm and that was when I was really hooked.  I started growing fillers on my farm and everything just fell into place from there.   I supplied fillers wholesale in Port Elizabeth and after selling my farm I just couldn’t let it go.  I now grow a few fillers where -ever I can find open ground.  I was invited by a friend to start a florist inside her bistro, I feel like I’m on holiday every day – it is the most wonderful thing to work with flower and still get paid for it.

I have supplied the local P&P with mixed bunches for many years and I still continue to do that but I will accept any challenge that comes my way where flowers are concerned.  I have done bouquets for events, private dinners, corporate dinners, office entrances, weddings and love to do personalised impromptu bunches for dinners at the bistro.   There is no greater feeling to give someone a bunch of flowers; it never fails to bring a smile.

The florist, ‘Bouquet’ is situated in New Street, Grahamstown, in a corner inside Haricots Restaurant and Bistro.  I am in the florist from 9h30 to 16h00 every day but the restaurant is open until late and the waitresses are very keen to assist whenever needed.   Weather I sell one stem or a huge bouquet it is always done with equal enthusiasm and joy.

My life journey as an adult started as a secretary, taught for many years, farmed and now I have reached what I think I was born to do.  I love every minute.
