I am a psychodynamic psychotherapist/ clinical psychologist, registered with the Health Professions Council of South Africa. I qualified in 2005 with a Master’s degree in Clinical Psychology at Rhodes University and have been running my private practice since 2010. I have an eclectic approach to my work which includes focussing on early relationships with parental figures and the impact on the child with effects often lasting throughout an individual’s young adult and adult life. I also make use of Cognitive Behavioural Therapy, Jungian therapy, as well as mindfulness and expressive therapies to help the client through their specific healing process. Therapy starts with an assessment which allows the client and I to gain a deeper understanding of the causes of their problems and decide together what is best for their specific psychological needs. I also always keep in mind that each person deeply 'knows' what they need and trust in the the creative process of their healing. The therapeutic relationship offers a safe, containing space where the client learns to trust in the creative unfolding of their inner world and soulful journey where I play the role of a non-judgemental facilitator or guide, with an awareness of not imposing my ideas or values.
I work with various emotional difficulties including anxiety, depression, anger, worry, trauma, childhood abuse, relationship problems, family of origin problems, burn-out and self-care, low self-esteem, assertiveness, insomnia, parenting, shame and vulnerability, spiritual struggles and life-transitions. I also have a keen interest in personality/character disorders especially those in close contact with Narcissistic individuals and their impact on others. I also am interested in the politics of oppression and the effects of race, class and gender dynamics, both past and present in the South African context. Therefore I see myself as a psychosocial activist. I believe in the power of nature, music and art to uplift an individual and often use these as tools in assisting an individual’s healing process.
Beside working from my rooms in the Southern Suburbs of Cape Town I also offer Skype sessions for those who cannot travel to my practice.
I am a member of the South African Psychoanalytic Confederation (SAPC) and the South African Psychoanalytic Initiative (SAPC).
