Charmaine De Waard Psychologist

I am a Counselling Psychologist and have been in private practice for 18 years. My
practice is set in the quiet surroundings of residential Westville which creates a much
more conducive environment to a good therapeutic outcome than a busy shopping
center environment.

I treat adults in a variety of presenting issues such as trauma, depression, anxiety,
adjustment, grief, general stress etc. I believe that addressing issues through
therapy is hugely beneficial, and in particular, in reducing the recurrence of
psychological issues as well as reducing the need to rely on ongoing chronic
medication. I use a variety of different treatment modalities that best suits the
individual and problem presented. I also have a particular focus in working with
couples in marital or relationship conflict. I am passionate about teaching people the
necessary skills to deal with future life issues in an empowering way. I work within a
short-term, solution-focused framework and I am contracted into medical aids.

I am also trained in divorce and family mediation. Over the years, it has become
apparent in the therapeutic setting of how detrimental an acrimonious divorce can be
on parental and parent-child relationships. Divorce by mediation helps the couple
make decisions regarding the division of assets, maintenance, and parenting. It
removes the painful win-lose atmosphere that is often created in adversarial
divorces. Partners are empowered to be part of the decision-making process.

. The process is a fraction of the time and cost that it takes acrimonious divorces to pass
through the legal system and it minimizes emotional trauma, while creating a co-
operative atmosphere to co-parent healthy well-adjusted children into the future once
the spousal relationship has ended. I assist couples in making relevant decisions
pertaining parenting and maintenance plans, which allows them to consult one
attorney together to present the divorce to the courts, thereby reducing the costs and
trauma of litigation dramatically.

Making the call for help is often a scary and overwhelming experience, but once
accomplished, it can be the most empowering experience in assisting you in taking
control of your life in this fast-paced world that we live in.
