Cisca Jansen Counselling
In the great scheme of things, I find meaning in being useful. I unquestionably wanted to contribute to the world in some way. I am also drawn to the stories, the ups and downs, the protagonists, antagonists, the motivations, and the unexpected turn of events. That is why I became a counsellor: to help make the endings of people’s stories a happy one.
So, after I completed my degree in psychology, and registered with the HPCSA as a psychological register Counsellor, I was left with very few job opportunities. You can imagine what that did to my self-esteem. However, I had to create my own opportunity if I didn’t want to change my entire field. At least I had plenty of time to put things together, and slowly but surely, my counselling practice was up and running.
Today I am able to see people online as well as face-to-face. I find that during the pandemic, client still prefer face-to-face sessions. My office is situated in Bellville, and I share the building with a lovely group of speech therapists. When someone asks me what my area of interests are, I always say adolescents and young adults are the age group I prefer working with. Nevertheless, I see people of all ages ranging from eleven years old to sixty-six. I also affiliate with multiple Employee Wellness Programs. So, the stories I listen to are predominantly those who cannot afford mental health services themselves and are lucky enough to have it covered through their work. Some of the themes of the stories I listen to are trauma or negative life events, stress, anxiety and burnout, family struggles, emotional dysregulation, loss of life direction, loneliness and depressiveness, self-esteem, grief and bereavement, and couples married and non-married.
Of course, there are days when the stories are harder than others. I have to perform my own mental care at home. My cat is an expert in absorbing all the pressure through her cuddles. Or I will lift my mood by playing a song on the ukulele or any self-care activity I think I require after the day’s stories.
