An unusual landmark along Main Road in Kyalami, is an ox wagon and a painted cow, in front of the Crowthorne Veterinary Clinic. Opened by Dr Sheelagh Higgerty in 1990, Crowthorne is a member of IVPD (Institute of Veterinary Practice Development), and founder member of nearby Equicare, a unique modern equine hospital facility which was established in 2000, and boasts the latest in X-ray and CT scan technology.
We pride ourselves in providing professional veterinary care of the highest standard. Crowthorne clinic is one of the few veterinary practices that treat not only all types of domestic pets, but also horses and production animals such as cows, sheep, pigs, goats and even alpacas.
Our work covers everything from general health and routine procedures to medical and surgical management.
We have modern X-Ray, Ultrasound and CT facilities: This practice has a particular interest in diagnostic imaging for both small and large animals. We have also recently acquired the latest Metron DVM digital X-ray machine, which is portable. This provides our vets with greater flexibility in treating all animals, both near and far.
Dr Sheelagh Higgerty, BA (Natal), BVSc (Hons) (Pret) currently the sole owner of the clinic, is an FEI Official and Treating Veterinarian in seven equestrian disciplines. She has a post-graduate degree in Diagnostic Imaging. Sheelagh is Chairperson of the SAEF’s Veterinary Commission, Chairperson of the South African Equine Veterinary Association Sport Horse Committee and National Head Veterinarian in South Africa for the FEI. Sheelagh travelled as part of Team South Africa to the World Equestrian Games, Kentucky (2010) and Normandy (2014), as well as the 2016 London Olympic Games as team veterinarian.
