Kiara Occupational Therapy is a paediatric Occupational Therapy Practice based in Johannesburg South. We work with children of various ages from new-borns up to the age of 12. Kiara Occupational Therapy strives to create a fun and safe environment for children, allowing them to grow and reach their full potential. We understand that each child is unique and benefits from the right kind of attention, as society demands more from our kids. We aim to equip not only the child but parents as well because understanding is only useful if we know how to respond to our kids. We all learn better when we enjoy what we are doing. Along with the above, we have a unique interest in hippotherapy. Hippotherapy is a therapeutic intervention strategy in which the movement of a horse is used as part of a treatment plan and is carried out by Occupational Therapists, Physiotherapists and Speech Therapists. The manner in which the horse is used for individual clients depends on their specific needs. It must be noted that hippotherapy is not horse riding lessons, or therapeutic riding. A number of studies have documented physical, neurological, sensory and psychological benefits. Benefits include improved cognitive, emotional and behavioural functioning, gross and fine motor skills, coordination, postural control, balance, weight bearing, motor planning and various sensory inputs. The natural environment of hippotherapy is also beneficial as it offers a change to the usual clinical setting.
