Kim is the proud owner and Biokineticist at ‘Kim Decina Biokineticist’. She completed her Masters of Science in Biokinetics, BA HMS Honours in Sport Science, BA HMS Honours in Biokinetics and Bachelor in Sport Science degrees (all with distinction) at the University of Pretoria, whilst also being awarded the BASA student of the year award in 2014. Her Masters thesis was titled: ‘The effect of the Pilates method of exercise on the pain & functionality of the upper extremities in female office workers in Pretoria’.
As an ex-international Artistic gymnast, her love for movement developed at a young age. During her high school years, Kim sustained a broken foot and was referred to a Biokineticist for exercise rehabilitation, in order to resume her gymnastics training as soon as possible. It was during this time that she was introduced to the profession of Biokinetics and realised that it was exactly what she wanted to do. Biokinetics was the perfect combination of what she loved: movement and exercise, together with the scientific knowledge of the human body and how it works.
Working as a Biokineticist, she enjoys being able to help others achieve and maintain a high level of physical health & well-being. Her strong background in sport has enabled her to apply those techniques and principles to her work, specifically during injury rehabilitation or prevention.
Kim has 7 years of experience in the Biokinetics industry, working with a variety of orthopaedic and sports injuries, as well as the rehabilitation of individuals with chronic diseases and disabilities. She is passionate about improving her patient’s quality of life with the use of exercise, and has a special interest in working with the elderly, as well as patients with neuromuscular conditions (including Stroke and Brain Injuries, Parkinsons, MS, Cerebral Palsy, Muscular dystrophy, Paraplegia and Tetraplegia). Kim is also a certified deep tissue and sports massage therapist, and a qualified mat-based Pilates instructor. Alongside her clinical work, she has also spent some time in the academic field, lecturing at a collegiate and university level.
After 4 years of working in Biokinetics practices in Pretoria, she opened ‘Kim Decina Biokineticist’ in July 2019, her own practice in the heart of Sea Point, Cape Town. Her practice offers individualised rehabilitative exercise sessions for orthopaedic injuries and chronic conditions, exercise for the elderly, physical development in children, mat-based Pilates, deep tissue and sports massage, and Vitality Fitness Assessments.
When she is not dedicating 200% of her time to her practice, Kim enjoys travelling, writing, exploring the outdoors, staying active and is somewhat of a Formula 1 fanatic.
