Lindiwe Tom Clinical Psychologist

BACKGROUND

All categories of professional psychology are regulated by the Health Professions Council of South Africa (HPCSA). Only professionals registered with the HPCSA may execute any form of a psychological act as defined by the Health Professions Act of 1974.

I am licensed with the HPCSA as a Clinical Psychologist with Independent Practice status, meaning that I met the training and supervision requirements for the council. Clinical Psychology as a specialty provides services to individuals and families across the lifespan and from all ethnic, cultural and socioeconomic backgrounds, as well as groups and communities. Clinical Psychologists address behavioural and mental health issues such as intellectual, emotional, psychological, minor adjustments as well as severe psychopathology.

I started my undergraduate study at the University of Zululand where I obtained a Bachelor of Commerce degree majoring in Industrial Psychology and Business Economics. I did my Honours degree in Psychology at the University of Witwatersrand where I was introduced to abnormal psychology, and I completed my studies at the University of Pretoria where I achieved my Masters degree in Clinical Psychology. At the University of Pretoria I was exposed to Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT), Psychodynamic Therapy, Narrative Therapy and Systemic Therapy. Due to the diverse form of training that I received, I am therefore able to tailor the treatment based on client needs.

I worked at Sterkfontein Psychiatric Institution for my internship where I was exposed to adult individual and group therapy but also neuropsychological and personality assessments. I also serviced Kagiso Clinic during the time of my internship seeing adult and children in therapy. I then moved to Chris Hani Baragwanath Hospital (Bara) where I did my community service. At Bara I worked at the Adult Psychiatric Unit managing both male and female wards. Here I was exposed to working with several psychiatric conditions in an in-patient and outpatient facility. Part of my duties was also to conduct various assessments such as neuropsychological, personality and emotional functioning.

I started working in private practice on a full time basis in 2011. I currently work with adults, adolescents, couples and families dealing with various psychological issues including (but not limited to) depression, stress, anxiety /panic, loss / grief, trauma, relationship problems, self-esteem issues, self-harm/mutilation, suicidal thoughts and various psychiatric disorders.  I offer assessments including, emotional functioning, neuropsychological, career guidance as well as subject choice for students in Grade 9.

Companies that I have partnered with in the past for employee wellness include:

  • ICAS
  • EOH
  • Healthi Choices
  • Gauteng Partnership Fund
  • Open Learning Group
  • Bidvest Laundry Group
  • JTI

OBJECTIVE

Recognising that employees perform their best when they are healthy and that optimal employee performance is necessary for the company to be a leader in its field; the mental health promotion program aims to improve employee mental health, wellbeing and assist in employee satisfaction with the company.
