Winnie Madikizela Mandela is a South African activist and politician who has held several government positions and is president of the African National Congress Women’s League. She is a member of the ANC’s National Executive Committee. She was married to Nelson Mandela for 38 years, including 27 years during which he was imprisoned. Of all the major figures who came to global prominence during the South African liberation struggle, Winnie Madikizela-Mandela was seen as the most at home in the world of celebrity culture, and for many of the years just before Nelson Mandela’s release from 27 years in prison, she was his public face, bringing word of his thoughts and his state of mind. She holds a degree in international relations from WITS University and a Diploma in social work. Along with being offered academic honours abroad, the latest being a doctorate from Makerere University in Kenya.
In 1969 she spent 491 days in solitary confinement at Pretoria central prison. She organised local clinics, campaigned actively for equal rights and was promoted by the ANC as a symbol of its struggle against apartheid. Still an active member of the ANC Winnie Mandela says “I am honoured that this project gives me more strength and a belief that the future of South Africa is a brighter one for everyone, no matter the colour of your skin. The blanket is manufactured in China and imported by Kingday Textiles. The blanket is made of DTY Polyester Yarn 250D/122F. Dimensions: 240cm X 200cm | Weight: 4kg. At the age of 82, she is still an activist, Mama Winnie remains popular among her supporters, who refer to her as the “Mother of the Nation” We will be hosting a launch at Zone 6 Venue, Diepkloof on Sunday, 27 May 2018. The blanket sales will commence online at 15:00 on the day and each purchase is R950 including VAT, excluding courier fees. The blanket will also accompany a genuine numbered, signed certificate of purchase. A portion of the proceeds of each blanket will be donated to Mama Winnie Mandela and her foundation to be used for youth development.
